HEATHER COX

sculpture and installation projects

The following pieces are characterized by precisely-crafted objects that use repetition and shifting scale to address issues of visibility, discovery and metamorphosis. Each artwork invites a closer look. The viewer’s physical approach is often accompanied by curiosity, confusion and moments of recognition. My artwork acts as a catalyst for these momentary thresholds.

Phalanx is a floor installation of spooky, exoskeletal creatures. Composite images of the artist‚s head and hands are folded into thousands of small paper sculptures. Eyes open and eyes closed, this amphibious population is on the move. A raised walkway allows the viewer to navigate the hordes. Below, the crab-like forms reproduce and create their own interactive eddies. This tidal army is confrontational. En masse, the creatures suggest both physical and psychological invasion.
